From an acorn dream to the mighty oak tree that dons an extraordinary legacy, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated has trailblazed a path that affords our wonderful sisterhood the joy of many accomplishments. Founded on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, on November 12, 1922, seven young educators collaborated on developing a Sisterhood that promoted Scholarship and delivered Service to all women.
As Founder’Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian Irene White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford, Bessie Mae Downey Rhodes Martin, and Cubena McClure forged a path for greatness, their vision has served as a lasting mission for Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority.
Gamma Gamma Sigma Chapter, an alumnae chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., holds a special place in history. On April 17, 1955, they achieved a significant milestone by inducting their first membership club after years of patience and persistence. This pioneering club consisted of seven remarkable women:
These visionary women exemplified high academic achievement, good moral character, and strong leadership standards. Their dedication paved the way for future generations of sorority members. Through sisterhood, scholarship, and service, Gamma Gamma Sigma continues to amplify greatness and make a positive impact in the West Palm Beach community and beyond. As they celebrate 101 years of existence, their commitment to education, health awareness, and leadership development remains unwavering. The ladies of Gamma Gamma Sigma Chapter organize various events, including the annual Big Hat Jazz Brunch, scholarship awards fundraisers, social gatherings, and community service projects. Their goal is to build a brighter future for their community through service, training, and involvement.
WE PRESENT TO YOU GAMMA GAMMA SIGMA
On Sunday, April 17, 1955, we celebrated the receiving of the charter of Gamma Gamma Sigma Chapter at West Riviera Elementary School, namely at an All-Greek Vesper. The inspiring program included representatives from members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) in which they brought greetings and offered their support in all of our endeavors. As we sought young ladies of high academic achievement, good moral character, and high leadership standards, we welcomed our first pledge club members.
With many years of patience and persistence, Gamma Gamma Sigma inducted its first membership club: Anginora Brown, Elnora Barber, Agnes Balfour, Anne Brooks, Ineria Hudnell, Leola Massey, and Elizabeth Smith. Gamma Gamma Sigma’s mandate is to help carry out the National mandate of building better communities through our slogan, “Greater Service, Greater Progress”.
In loving service, Tequesta C. Alston Basileus, Gamma Gamma Sigma Chapter
In November 1947, ten (10) Beta Delta Sigma Chapter members in Tallahassee were challenged to extend Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority in Florida. Sarah Kibble, a student and one of the ten, accepted the challenge to bring Sigma to the Palm Beaches. Working under the auspices of Soror Minerva Mathews, Basileus of Beta Delta Sigma, and with the help of Soror Audrey Hogan, Boynton Beach, Florida, four talented young ladies were pledged into the Aurora Pledge Club. Soror Cleo Seary, (now Higgins) teacher at Bethune-Cookman College, worked along with Kibble to form a Charter Chapter of forty-five (45) interests from the Daytona Beach area and three (3) from the Palm Beaches. Forty-eight (48) were inducted into this great sorority in May 1948, with Soror Alto Bennings, the Regional Syntaktes, presiding. The new Palm Beach members, Neilia Cunningham, Amy Holliday, and Janie Koon, returned to West Palm Beach and diligently worked to build our sisterhood. With two (2) new members, Ruth Edgecombe and Sarah Rolle, joining our ranks, our dream of establishing a chapter was realized. In 1955, these five (5) sorors traveled to Miami to assist Soror Myrtle Russell in building our legacy. We received the charter on March 11, 1955, at the Southeastern Regional Conference in Tampa, Florida.
